Shanghai Provincial High School was a school founded and led directly by Shanghai Underground Party on the eve of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945. In the spring of 1945, the General Party Branch of St. John’s University under the leadership of the University Committee of the Underground Party Committee of the Chinese Communist Party decided to establish a school as a support base for the liberation and savings of Shanghai and the development of revolutionary forces, and to cultivate the building strength for New China. At the beginning of the school establishment, there were no funds, no school buildings, and no equipment. The difficulties were numerous. Under the party’s leadership, the comrades of the preparatory construction group launched the united front work and fought for Fu Tongxian, the director of the Department of Education of St. John’s University, and Chen Heqin, a progressive educator.
