It is estimated that by the middle of the next century, the number of global hip fractures due to osteoporosis has tripled, from 1.7 million in 1990 to 6.3 million in 2050. At present, most hip fractures occur in Europe and North America. Changes in demographics over the next 50 years will result in an unprecedented increase in the number of seniors in Asia, Africa and South America. As a result, up to 75% of hip fractures in the next 50 years will occur in developing countries. In the light of these trends, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, WHO Director-General, cites cardiovascular disease as an example. Brundtland said 25 years ago, world-renowned cardiovascular experts warned of the impending heart attack in developing countries. But the caveat was ignored, and people are now seeing cardiovascular disease in developing countries
