In 1990, the US Geological Survey completed two major research projects: “natural disasters” and “water quality.” In 1990, the yearbook of the Geological Survey focused on the progress of the current research work and pointed out that the purpose of the research work was to devote itself to Mitigating the effects of natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. Disaster-related articles included in the Yearbook include a description of the International Decade for Disaster Reduction, the 1989 Earthquake in the Loma Prieta, Hurricane Hugo, Redoubt Alaska and Hawaii Kilauea volcano eruption. The yearbook also focused on the United States National Water Quality Assessment Program, which can help answer the question, “What about our water quality ?,” and revealed the status of surface water and groundwater quality in the United States and development trend.
