Partly because of a beneficial gene (Ubiquitin7), in the future potatoes can be easily avoided by soft-rot microorganisms. Researchers at the Bureau of Agricultural Research cut off a portion of the gene and built it on the anti-rot-rot gene, transplanting the new genome onto the test potatoes. In preliminary tests in laboratories and greenhouses, tubers resist the hazards of microorganisms that cause soft rot. The Ubiquitin7 gene fragment scientists call the promoter, whose function is to open and close the gene. For geneticists, powerful promoters are an invaluable tool.
