钱学森同志在1990年12月31日的人民日报上发表题为“要从整体上考虑并解决问题”的文章中,曾预言煤炭地下气化工作一旦做成了,就会使我们整个的生产技术大为改观。目前这一门捷列夫百余年前提出的煤炭地下气化技术的设想,在我国已有较大实验成果。中国矿业大学煤炭地下气化研究中心与徐州矿务局合作,于1994年11月9日获得的地下煤气每立方米热值高达3000千卡以上,成本仅0.15元/m~3以下,远远超过国际上煤气热值为2000多千卡的水平。这些高热值地下煤气已直接供给居民使用。一般来说,煤炭开采仅能掘出50%左右,还有一半煤炭资源残留在地下,新工艺除着眼于增大煤的燃烧量与热能量外,还以利用废旧煤矿为对象,在废弃的新河二号井残留煤柱中,掘出气化通道,在首尾从地面打进气孔和出气
