Vienna’s Museum of Art History has a long history and is Austria’s most important museum. The museum currently holds more than 500,000 pieces of art treasures from all over the world, of which paintings are the most abundant and world-famous. The museum’s collection originally belonged to the Austrian royal family. Since the 16th century, all previous Austrian royal families have made positive contributions to the continuous enrichment of museum collections. In 1891, the entire royal collection was moved to the newly built museum, which was officially opened to the public. However, the collection was still owned by the royal family. After the First World War in 1919, the collections of the museum were nationalized. Since then, all the Austrian governments have invested a great deal in funds to expand their collections, giving it the current scale of world attention.
