大众文化是现代西方社会主要的文化状态。在伯明翰学派看来,在大众文化与其他文化的关系上,大众文化作为文化的一种存在形态,不同于以政治和经济关系为核心内容的意识形态;大众文化承载主流文化,主流文化引领大众文化;大众文化中蕴含着精英文化元素,精英文化来源于大众文化的土壤。伯明翰学派的文化学者认为,大众文化承载着上层建筑与经济基础的辩证凝聚功能和作用。
Popular culture is the main cultural state in modern Western society. In the opinion of the Birmingham School, in terms of the relationship between popular culture and other cultures, popular culture as an existing form of culture is different from ideology with political and economic relations as the core content. Popular culture carries mainstream culture while mainstream culture leads the public Culture; popular culture contains the elite culture elements, elite culture from the soil of popular culture. Cultural scholars of the Birmingham School believe that mass culture carries the dialectical cohesive function and role of superstructure and economic foundation.
