This is an academic dialogue concerning the Chinese es says in the 1990s.The participants are inclined to agree on the conclusion that there was an “essay craze” in the 1990s in China,with the revival of familiar essays and the prosperity of newspaper ess ays as the most significant signs, both of which powerfully shocked the contemp or ary modes of essay writing by opening up new space for expression.Essays of the 1 990s are a development of those of the 1980s.They reflect new efforts of explora tion as well as the traditions of modern essays,and will surely arouse further co nsiderations about the concept of essay and its way of development.
