我国传统语言学没有建立系统的语法理论体系。到清末，列强入侵，中西文化开始大规模接触、碰撞。马建忠学贯中西，受西方语法理论的启发和影响写出《马氏文通》。这样的历史背景，对传统语言学的继承，对西方理论的借鉴，再加上马氏的思考和创新，就使该书中产生了许多矛盾。
China’s traditional linguistics did not establish a systematic theoretical system of grammar. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, the powers invaded and the Chinese and Western cultures began to make large-scale contacts and collisions. Ma Jianzhong learned Chinese and Western, inspired by Western grammar theory and write << Ma’s text pass >>. This historical background, the inheritance of traditional linguistics and the reference to western theories, combined with the thinking and innovation of Markovs, have produced many contradictions in the book.
