Ion kinetic energy mass spectrometry (MIKES) opens up a new avenue for the determination of unknown compound structures. This method uses a mass spectrometer to select ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio before the ions enter the fan-shaped electric field. In addition to getting the information that routine mass spectrometry can produce, this new method can also get some additional analytical data. Collision gas-induced fission further extends the use of this method. This article discusses the details of this method and illustrates the experimental results of the two compounds separately. The first compound may contain only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen while the second contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur.
