In October 2004, China’s Ministry of Health and other departments jointly issued a survey on nutrition and health of Chinese residents. The lack of trace elements such as iron, calcium and vitamin A is a common problem for urban and rural residents in China. Child malnutrition is still severe in rural areas, with children under 5 years of age at a rate of 17.3% and low birth weight, respectively, and children up to 29.3% and 14.4% in impoverished rural areas, respectively. The growth retardation rate was the highest in the 1-year-old group, with an average of 20.9% in rural areas and 34.6% in impoverished rural areas.
