刘熙载“书当造乎自然”之说源于东汉书法家蔡邕《九势》:“夫书肇于自然,自然既立,阴阳生焉,阴阳既生,形势出矣。”“书肇于自然”体现了书与自然的内在联系,而削弱人的作用,提出书如自然的观点,这与道家“无为”思想相暗合。而“书当造乎自然”则明确了人书的内在联系,与儒家“有为”思想相贯通,它强化了人的作用,突出了“书如其人”的核心。刘熙载提出“书当造乎自然”的论断是对唐朝以前具有鲜活、外向,接近自然的观点及其宋代之后儒家思想的融合和完善,他将书法的创作理论体系和评价标准提高到一个新的高度。
