The new business model of the 21st century is not in fact a “multinational corporation.” The new form of organization, which we call Global Integrated Enterprise. In the TNC model, companies build local capacity in key markets and perform other functions on a global basis. For example, multinational corporations in the United States set up factories in Europe and Asia to establish a localized employee system while leaving research and development and product design in their home countries. In contrast, globally integrated enterprises reform their strategy, management and operation to integrate production globally and bring value to customers. Thanks to shared technology and common business standards, and thanks to the global information technology and communications infrastructure, this approach is now possible.
