The Barthel index was used to assess ADL in 120 stroke inpatients at 5-6 weeks after onset. Because of the Brunnstrom functional classification of stroke patients’ limbs was highly correlated with ADL score, lower limb correlation was higher than that of upper limbs. Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that somatic (hemiplegia) and psychological (cognitive impairment and depression) factors affected ADL. These findings suggest that the improvement of ADL ability is not only dependent on the improvement of limb dysfunction, improving cognitive function and improving the emotional status, but also for the comprehensive rehabilitation and return to society of stroke patients.
