3081处理机是IBM第一台使用LSI技术的大型机。所以对设计提出了许多全新的要求。为了既要达到产品预定目标,又维持可以接受的开发费用和进度,必须解决一系列新的问题。本文说明了3081处理机设计的各方面及其特性,给出了因使用LSI而采取的一些折衷手段。所选择的设计对策包括:机器组织、性能水平、制造费用、测试及服务手段和开发进度之间的折衷平衡。设计过程中引入了一个全新的验证方法,其特征是硬件流程图法和严格的设计规则。基于这次开发的经验,探讨了超大规模集成电路(VLSI)机器制造的想法。
The 3081 processor is IBM’s first mainframe to use LSI technology. So many new design requirements. In order to achieve both the product’s intended target and the acceptable development cost and progress, a series of new problems must be solved. This article explains all aspects of the 3081 processor design and its features, and gives some trade-offs to LSI adoption. The design strategies chosen include a trade-off between machine organization, performance levels, manufacturing costs, testing and service tools, and development schedules. A completely new approach to verification has been introduced in the design process, which is characterized by a hardware flowchart and strict design rules. Based on this development experience, the idea of making VLSI machines was explored.
