据说,马友友的父亲马孝骏有一个独特的理论。他认为,要出一个艺术家,必须是几代人的结晶:爷爷辈有钱,父亲辈有文化,儿子才能有条件成为艺术家。马友友恰好就是这样的“钱”和“文化”的结晶。他的爷爷是地主,父亲是音乐教育学博士,母亲是声乐演员。再加上生在法国,长在美国,却又有一个传统气息浓郁的中国式家庭背景,在这种多元文化融合的滋养下,也许马友友想不成为艺术家都困难。这或许是一种幽默的说法。后来,马友友回忆,其实他小时候也是一个贪玩的孩子,是在父亲的严词厉色之下开始练琴生涯的。
