The criteria published by Pierce (1913) to distinguish Anthonomus grandis thurberiae Pi-erce and Anthonomus grandis Boheman were limited to the identification of the major populations of both species. The cotton boll weevil distributes throughout the southeastern United States, but not in western Texas. Wild cotton boll weevils are limited to the United States, Arizona. But if you try to use Pierce’s standard to identify unknown species, you will feel a bit difficult. Some boll weevils look very much like wild boll weevils, while wild boll weevil looks sometimes like Mexican cotton
