“新疆和田玉,精致扬州工。”这是玉器行业中流行的一句行话。扬州玉雕制作技艺源远流长。清代学者谢坤在《春草堂集》中就曾写道:“宋制玲珑玉塔,塔玉雪白,绝无所谓饭绺瑕璺。高七寸,作七级,其制六面,面面有栏,栏内佛像,螺髻眉目毕现……塔顶有连环小索,系诸顶层六角,绝不紊乱,所言鬼斧神工莫能过是。”这段文字生动地描写了宋代扬州玉器在浮雕、镂空及链条等制作中所表现出的精湛工艺。
