Objective To clarify the effect of endocrine factors on the repair of bone defects at the ultrastructure level. Methods The model of two-wall bone defect in dog's alveolar bone was used to observe the ultrastructural changes of alveolar bone in the process of alveolar bone removal after ovariectomy, diabetes mellitus and elevated thyroxine level. Results The formation of new bone in the ovariectomized group was significantly slower than that in the normal control group at the same period. The bone in the induced diabetic group was obviously sparse and the collagen was destroyed and degenerated. The bone formation decreased in the thyroid hormone group, especially at 6 months. The defect is replaced by fibrous connective tissue. Conclusions confirmed that alveolar bone repair by systemic endocrine factors.
