In recent years, the appreciation of Taiwan’s NT $, the rising labor costs, the rising cost of land and capital and the increase in environmental protection costs in Taiwan have had a considerable impact on Taiwan’s economy, especially manufacturing. The manufacturing industry has shown a tendency of rapid decline. The main manifestations are as follows: 1) Manufacturing output showed negative growth. In 1986 and 1987, the value of manufacturing output in Taiwan increased by 9.7% and 9.1% respectively, from 4.9% and 5.1% respectively in 1988 and 1989 to 4.1% in the first half of 1990.
