先秦时代，在诗歌理论上提出了“言志说”，它所强调的是用诗歌来表现人的思想、志向和抱负。这个命题从一个方面揭示了诗歌的本质特征，就是诗歌是表达人类的思想认识的。但它重理而不重情。到了汉代，尤其是钟嵘时，诗歌理论有了一个重要的发展，其标志是对诗歌本质的认识。
