我国四大佛教名山之一的峨眉山,位于四川盆地西缘,海拔3099米,不但高于五岳和其他佛教名山,而且地层出露较为完整,从前震旦系到第四系地层都很发育,有些甚至是我国重要的标准剖面,在祖国的风景名山中独树一帜,享有“天然地质博物馆”之美誉。在群星灿烂的众多岩石中,有一颗特别引入注目的璀璨明星,它就是以峨帽山命名的岩石——峨眉山玄武岩(P_2β)!峨眉山玄武岩形成于约2亿5千万年前的晚二叠世,它的产状表现为裂隙式喷发,构成了大面积的泛流
