The Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (GEA) had to admit in mid-February that the key Gigabit Ethernet standard 802.3z originally expected to be ratified by the IEEE in March would have been delayed for at least three months for technical reasons. That means suppliers wait until June, perhaps September or later, to claim their Gigabit Ethernet products are up to standard. IEEE802.3z sub-committee agreed that the key issue of differential mode delay (DMD) issues must be studied in depth. There are two worst-case scenarios: forcing the IEEE to adopt a shorter distance than expected, or for transponders and fiber suppliers to change their products. This issue involves communicating over fibers greater than 100 meters. The standard the Alliance hopes to pass can run on 260-meter-long fiber. The alliance now has to wait for fiber optic experts to migrate gigabit Ethernet over multimode fiber
