目前,我们国家的基础教育正处于由“应试教育”向素质教育转轨的改革时期所谓素质教育就是根据社会发展和人的发展的实际需要,以全面提高学生素质为目的,对弱智儿童进行思想品德教育,让他们学会做人,对弱智学生进行文化基础知识教学,让他们学会学习,重视培养学生的社会适应能力,让他们学会生存,加强劳动教育,让他们学会劳动。弱智教育是我国基础教育的一个重要组成部分,也同样肩负着素质教育的神圣使命。
