《虞美人盛开的山坡》是宫崎吾朗导演的第二部作品。作品描述了女主人公松崎海与男主人公风间俊两位高中生之间的故事,他们首先从陌生到互相帮助,再到互生好感,再后来产生两人是兄妹的误会,最后解除误会两人终成眷属,两人之间的情愫是伴随着学校拉丁区将被拆除,学生们为保卫拉丁区不懈努力最终取得胜利的故事而发展的。看得出来,宫崎吾朗的这部作品没想讨好所有的观众,因为只有那些有经历过和熟知日本历史的人才能读懂导演要传达的信息。
