Compounds are very common in our daily life, so the investigation of compounds is of great use. Nowadays there has been a lot of research on compounds, such as in the stress and intrinsic qualities. In this paper I give an analysis about these achievements in compounds. In my opinion, there are a lot of researches on compounds, so it is difficult to make breakthroughs, but the methods of quantifying and experiments have a great significance for future’s study.
Keywords: English compounds; stress; intrinsic qualities
Introduction
There is broad consensus that the investigation of English compounds is of great significance. Bauer and Huddleston note that noun - noun compounding is by far the most productive kind of compounding in English, and indeed the most productive kind of word-formation. Through investigating compounds in English, it helps us to have a closer look at compounding from different perspectives. It also contributes to the formation of new words according to its rules and principles. Therefore, it may help us to have easier access to memorize English vocabularies or create new words.
1. A brief review of some analyses of English compounds
1.1 The stress of English compounds
Recent research has shown that the Compound Stress Rules cannot be applicable to the stress of all English compounds. Lappe and Plag (2007) made a research mainly on NN compounds. They firstly divided the compounds into 3 types and then used two exemplar-based algorithms--TiMBL and AM. They were able to predict the actual distribution of left and right stress in English compounds. Later, Giegerich expands the sphere and investigates the distribution of end-stress and fore-stress among NN and NNN compounds. Through making parallelism between phrase and compounds, he put forward that a more phrase-like NN is more likely to display end-stress. But there are no grounds for the statement that all end-stressed NNs are phrases.
What these researchers have found points out the rough direction of stress of compounds. It breaks the sanctity of the Compound Stress Rules, and specifies the situations where we are faced with the end-stress of compounds. It helps us to pronounce compounds properly and effectively avoid misunderstanding the meanings.
1.2 The intrinsic qualities of English compounds
Researchers focus on the structure of compounds, then other qualities flow: syntax and semantic relations. Raki
