Bituminous heavy oil concentrates that appear near the oil-water interface in the reservoir are often referred to as tar mat. This concept implies the differentiation of a reservoir’s internal components. Under normal circumstances, this concept does not include tar sands and more homogeneous heavy oil deposits. According to the geochemical point of view, the formation of most asphalt seats is believed to be caused by deasphalting, which is one of the major processes that affect the nature of the reservoir’s crude oil. Biodegradation may also form asphalt seats, although there is sometimes evidence of insufficient evidence. Although the literature is often confused, the differentiation of the mature product of the oil layer is also considered as the formation of asphalt mat. This phenomenon has been reported on numerous occasions in petroleum engineering publications, but lacking in its physical and geochemical studies
