History tells us that the vital waterway system in towns plays an important role in urban life. Life cannot be separated from water. Early human settlement was developed along the waterway. Today, whether it is a river or a stream, it still occupies a pivotal position in the town. In the towns of Jiangnan, China, we have discovered the value of waterways in people’s lives: as transportation and communications, water supply and drainage, irrigation and regulation of the urban microclimate, creating a good living environment and as a buffer for different temperatures. In fact, they are the basis for the coordinated life of China’s waterside towns and the creation of architectural space.
