In the next 10 or 20 years, four major areas of information technology and management, chemistry, catalysis and technology selection, composition, implementation and operation are likely to bring major technological advances. Information technology can enable refiners to formulate more and more advanced linear schemes that integrate crude oil analysis and operating conditions. In the long run, the refinery is a chemical plant. Increasingly stringent fuel requirements mean that refiners must separate different chemical components and learn how to treat them separately, rather than treating them centrally. Catalytic innovation accelerates, catalyst life increases by 50%, higher yields are achieved with a single unit or with poor quality crude oil and feedstock, reducing the ability to invest in high quality clean fuels.
