西方艺术是世界艺术的重要部分,出现了无数璀璨的作品,给世界艺术的发展增光添色。在整个西方艺术史上,从18世纪初的洛可可艺术开始,到19世纪后半期的印象派结束为止,这段时期是连接着古代与现代,而且更加向现代靠近的极为重要的过渡阶段。当时的法国是西方艺术的中心,涌现出各种流派,如新古典主义、浪漫主义、现实主义、象征主义、印象主义等等。其中尤以浪漫主义、现实主义、印象主义最为重要,是贯穿19世纪法国乃至整个西方世界艺术发展的主线,支撑起整个19世纪法国艺术发展史的脉络,是19世纪法国画坛上的三次革命。
