湖南省绥宁县和新宁县等地山区,新发现有成片的天然长苞铁杉林或与银杉的混生林。长苞铁杉(Tsuga longibracteata)一般高30米,胸径50厘米,最高的一棵高42米,胸径130厘米,林地内有长苞铁杉和银杉幼树,其他植物种类很少。这些珍贵树种,已引起林业科学工作者的重视。长苞铁杉是第四纪冰川期幸存下来的植物,为我国特有树种。其树干通直,材质坚硬,纹理细密,耐水抗腐,为优良的工业和建筑用
