小麦赤霉病是我国长江中下游广大麦区的一种严重病害,对小麦生产威胁极大.因此,培育抗赤霉病的小麦新品种是当务之急,必须采取多种育种途径予以解决.由于赤霉病多属于多基因控制的数量性状,遗传力较低,一般认为用常规杂交法,较难选出突破性的抗病品种,而利用太谷核不育小麦进行轮回选择,使抗赤基因不断累加,有可能培育出抗性较强的新品种,这种育种方法已经引起了许多学者的关注.原墨西哥国际玉米小麦研究中心博劳格等人,1982年在给邓景扬来信中,曾提出用太谷核不育小麦进行金字塔式的抗赤霉病累加育种的设想.1983年华南农学院的张乐庆,1984年南京农学院的吴兆苏等人,也先后提出了利用太谷核不育小麦培育抗赤霉病品种的轮选方法.
