Naipaul debuted the literary world in the early 1950s, creating three Caribbean novels and novels of what he called apprenticeship projects and “social comedies.” The 1957 Yearling Grammy won the John Reese Memorial Award the following year, 1958 Elvira’s Right to Vote, and the 1959 short story collection Miguel Avenue was awarded the Maugham Prize in 1961.
