记得一九八二年一月的一天,我当选为副县长后第一次参加全县计划生育工作会议,县委书记沙金茂同志要我讲几句话,经过短暂的思考,我用普通话讲了起来,刚讲了几句,同志们的眼睛直瞪着我,刹那间,我意识到,好象有人在说,“当县长的怎么也说起普通话来?”这时,我犹豫了,调过头去问书记:“这样讲行不?”沙书记高兴地答道:“好嘛!就这样说下去!”话虽不多,可给了我很大的支持和鼓励。从此,在各种会议,各种场合,我都坚持讲普通话,渐渐地,机关干部、城乡群众,听习惯了,再也没有人感到惊奇了,而且都投之以赞许的目光。讲普通话,需要长期坚持,形成习惯。拿我自己来说,年幼时受到老师的启发辅导,就对说普通话很有兴趣;做了语文教师以后,更觉得带头说普通话是义不容辞的职责。一九五六年春,我参加了省普通话训练班,教育厅领导同志要求我们回去以后做推普的骨干,坚持讲,积极推。从那以后,我在讲课、谈话时,都坚持讲普通话,并

After I became a language teacher, I even felt that taking the lead in speaking Putonghua was an obligatory duty.
