Organizations are the most important tools for managers to implement strategies. Each organization has both formal and informal structures. Formal organizational structures can be represented by various components. These are the “buttons” that managers meticulously use when designing organizational structures. The components include: the degree of centralization, formalization, integration, and complexity. Empirical studies (including my research on Chinese companies) have consistently shown that the first three are the most important components of the structure. Now the author will discuss the following types of feasible formal organizational structures and their advantages and disadvantages, each of which represents a combination of different components.
