中国大百科全书出版社1978年成立,中国的百科全书事业从此迈出步伐,开始在一片荒芜的土地上开拓,翻耕,播种。经过15年的努力,现代大型综合性《中国大百科全书》74卷,已于1993年全部出齐,秀立于世界百科琼林之中。(可喜的是,《中国大百科全书》第二版,是统编按拼音字序排列的,32卷,已经编纂就绪,可望于2009年问世。)由于《中国大百科全书》的带动,各种专业性、地域性,以及不同档次的百科全书纷纷问世。据中国国家图书馆网络资料,馆藏书名上有“百科全书”字样的工具书,约略估计,有一千多种。中国的百科全书大家庭称得起人丁兴旺,子孙蕃息,
