纺织服装产业是常熟的传统支柱产业和重要民生产业,在促进地方经济发展、稳定就业和繁荣市场等方面,发挥了重要作用。常熟市共有纺织服装企业3000多家,从业人员超过20万人。常熟市形成了化纤、纺织、针织、印染、服装、家纺、纺织服装专业市场等较为完整的产业链,是国内重要的纺织服装集散地,羽绒服、休闲服、床上用品等产品占据全国较大市场份额。
