The Monkey
In hot countries the forests are not like our forests. They are large and dark, because the trees grow very thick and high there. There are such forests in Asia, Africa and America. This is the home of monkeys. They live in the trees and sleep on the branches. The monkey is a quick animal. It can walk on two legs and use its other two paws as arms. When the monkey wants to go quickly from one place to another, it runs along trees. Monkeys run from one tree to another, and all the time they make a noise as if talking to each other.
When night comes they roll themselves into a ball and sleep together in the high trees.
Monkeys eat vegetables, fruit and nuts. But sometimes they kill birds and lizards(蜥蜴)and eat them.
The monkey is a clever animal. People often tame(驯养)monkeys and teach them to do funny tricks.
The Hare
We may see hares(野兔)in warm and cold countries. The hare is a small animal. Its fur is thick, its tail is very short, but its ears are very long.
The hare is very timid (胆怯的)and is afraid of everything. It makes its home in the grass. In the daytime the hare is there. At night it goes to the field to look for food. Its food is corn, grass and vegetables. It also likes to gnaw the bark of trees(啃树皮)and spoils(损坏)it.
In the morning the hare comes back to its home. There it is safe because the colour of its fur is the same as the colour of the grass and the leaves.
At the first signal(信号)of danger the hare runs away. When people hunt the hare, it goes to the water where it swims very well.
The Zebra
The zebra(斑马) is a beautiful animal. Its white skin with black stripes(条纹)is very smooth. The colour of its skin helps the zebra to hide from its enemies.
Its home is Africa. The zebra likes to live in the hills better than in the plains(平原). Travellers say that zebras often go to the river to drink. They go there in the darkness. The lion often watches them there. As soon as the zebras see the lion, they run in terror(惊恐)back to the hills. But very often the lion catches a beautiful zebra.
When hunters attack zebras and the animals cannot run away, they turn their backs to the enemy and kick fiercely(凶猛地).
The zebra lives freely and cannot work like the horse or the ass(驴子). People cannot tame it.
