John Updike’s famous novel “A & P” tells the story of the protagonist Sami leaving behind the indignity of food malls manager Gehlen on three screaming girls wearing swimsuits. This article will start from the spirit of his departure after the discovery of epiphany to explore the continuation of a theme: personal needs and social needs of the conflict. The novel makes us realize that human nature is powerful, and even if social morality is sometimes very restrained, human nature can not be completely suppressed or strangled. However, the author enlightened people through the spiritual epiphany after Sami’s resignation finally. Human’s sociality requires people to follow relevant social morals. Any rebellion against ethics will pay a price, or even a heavy price.
