1955年在河南辉县,1958年在湖北孝感,湖南沅江,江西,1959年在湖南长沙,都发现有水稻能越冬隔年再生的事实。其中河南、江西、湖南等地发现的越冬稻并没有经过特别的防寒保护,而在冰天雪地的条件下渡过了严冬。这些事实,当然还只是一小部分。这些越冬稻有几个共同的明显的特征:(1)绝大多数都是耐寒性较强的粳稻;(2)再生能力非常强,如湖北孝感相广公社安全大队所发现的越冬稻(一季晚粳10509)每(艹斗)平均有170多个分蘖,湖南长沙发现的越冬稻是去年盆栽的晚粳稻,在冬季及早春时受过好几次的冰霜冻害,长出来的嫩叶死了好几次,于5月初进行分株插植,40多天后,每根越冬稻只有4寸多长的一般稻
