少年时爱打架、青年时爱打猎的黄永玉一直对“文革”期间被毁的2000多读书卡和200多块木刻作品耿耿于怀,那里面有许多他关于《水浒》人物的早期创作和构思,“现在刻不动了,只能用笔墨来画他们喽”。有着强烈英雄情结的黄永玉1988年重画《水浒》人物,但心境与当年已大不一样,“28年后画的东西肯定与当年不同,那时候年轻气盛,心中的梁山好汉顶天立地。如今却只想跟《水浒》人物们开开玩笑了。”
