抽象雕塑是特指形式中没有具体真实的客观表现对象,运用抽象性的造型语言和抽象性的思维方式进行创作的雕塑类型。抽象雕塑是现代雕塑中一个非常突出的一个门类,它完全消除了古典雕塑强调主题写实再现的局限,把艺术的基本要素——形式、线条、体积、空间、色彩、肌理作为本身具有独立意义的元素,并把这些元素进行抽象的组合,创造出抽象的形式,从而突破了艺术必须具有可辨认形象的藩篱,开创了艺术发展的新天地。抽象雕塑在形式上常给人以简单单纯的直觉印象,但是其内容含量却是非常丰富的。雕塑的造型性主要表现为在三度空间内可以直接目睹,但也间接出现在观众的感悟中。正因为雕塑的造型对生活的反映必须有所概括,即所谓艺术思维的抽象化,它的形式才可能蕴含丰富的内容。这种寓丰富与单纯的艺术概括,作为艺术思维虽有抽象性,却未曾排除形象的形式与内在意蕴的贯通,形成读者有所发现、延伸和判断的耐看的雕塑艺术。
