我感谢天津市数学会,使我有机会向天津的学生和教师谈谈一个对所有国家都会引起强烈兴趣的题目:数学在科学技术中的地位。这一题目也许对正在迅猛发展的中国更有意义。这里我想同时就教学和科研两方面来谈。我是一个数学家,既是一名数学教师,也是一名研究工作者;因而我也有幸把数学的教学和科研这两种从不分离的活动充满激情地伴随我的一生。也许人们会以为我将鼓吹无论在大学还是中学,无论是教学中还是入学考试中,数学都应该是至高无上的;但是,恰恰相反,我认为只通过数学来选拔人才是非常危险的。无论是对于社会和对于个人来说,重要的是,教学应该给学生一种营养丰富的食
I thank the Tianjin Mathematical Society for giving me the opportunity to talk to students and teachers in Tianjin about a topic that will have a strong interest in all countries: the status of mathematics in science and technology. This topic may make more sense to China, which is rapidly developing. Here I would like to talk about teaching and research at the same time. I am a mathematician who is both a mathematics teacher and a researcher; therefore I have the privilege of immersing myself in my passion for the teaching and research of mathematics. Maybe people will think that I will preach that mathematics should be supreme in both teaching and entrance exams, whether in college or secondary school. However, on the contrary, I think that selecting talents only through math is very dangerous. For both society and individuals, it is important that teaching should give students a nutritious food.
