Objective To explore the effect of welding on the cardiovascular function of male workers. Methods 135 male welders and 138 managerial staff without occupational exposure (control group) were enrolled in this study. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure were measured. Urine and manganese levels and serum myocardial enzymes were measured: creatine kinase (CK) and its isoenzymes (CK-MB), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), α-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (α-HBD) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Results The content of urinary manganese in the exposed group was significantly higher than that in the control group. The levels of serum CK, α-HBD and LDH in the exposed group were significantly increased (P <0.05), diastolic pressure was decreased and the abnormal rate of electrocardiogram was increased (P <0.05). Conclusion Welding has a certain impact on the cardiovascular function of workers.
