杨梅(Myrica rubra Sieb.& Zucc.)在我国已有2千年的历史。乌当区半栽培的杨梅,树龄有900余年,是该区土特产之一。新天食品厂对杨梅进行加工利用,已取得多方面的经验,增加工厂收益近万元;81年工厂收购杨梅,使农民增加了收入,仅阿栗大队出售杨梅收入就达1.05万元。矮生杨梅,是密植栽培的好砧木。随着国际上对杨梅制品的大宗需求,随着轻工业对原料需要的不断增长,野生杨梅将进入栽培、半栽培阶段,杨梅的重要性将越来越显著。因此,进行了重点调查并对其利用进行了研究。
