中國之有近代科學,不過近四十年來的事。最早成立的科學研究機關,要算北京前實業部的地質調查所,創始於一九一六年。六年以後中國科學社在南京建立了生物研究所。此時正值五四時代,科學與民主的口號被同時提出,大家要求提倡科學,科學研究才慢慢地在各大學裏有了立足點。從此各專門學會如地質學會、物理學會等逐一成立。到了一九二八年創設了中央研究院,一九二九年
There is modern science in China, but in the last forty years. The earliest establishment of scientific research institutions, to be considered the former Ministry of Industry Geological Survey, was founded in 1916.
