OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect and impact of the application of patient-participation mode on the prevention of unplanned extubation, and to provide a reference for clinical use of patient participation mode and reduction of unplanned extubation rate. Methods: The patients who were hospitalized and catheterized from September to December in 2016 were divided into groups. The control group received routine catheterization. Patients in the experimental group were guided by routine catheterization to encourage patients and their families to take part in catheter self-care. The two groups of patients with unplanned extubation observed catheter self-care knowledge and assessment of the implementation of patient participation in the model to prevent the impact of unplanned extubation. Results: The incidence of unplanned extubation and catheter self-care knowledge in the test group were higher than those in the control group (χ ~ 2 = 4.39, P <0.05; χ ~ 2 = 9.96, P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: With the implementation of patient engagement mode, patient safety management and active participation awareness are enhanced, the incidence of unplanned extubation is reduced, nurses’ work value is improved, and a better cooperation between nurses and patients is promoted, which is worthy of clinical promotion.
