Introduction Canada’s Department of Defense added a pilot high-performance synthetic aperture approach to the AN / APS-506 radar through the Communications Research Center of the Department of Communications. The AN / APS-506 is a derivative of AN / APS-116 designed to provide long-range maritime search capabilities in the presence of sea clutter. Many of the features of this radar are common to synthetic aperture radar systems. For example, AN / APS-506 transmitters produce high-power coherent pulses with large system bandwidth, stable antenna pitch and roll, and adequate illumination for synthetic aperture radar mapping applications. This article describes the improvements and additions to the AN / APS-506 radar, which are necessary to enable the SAR working on motion compensation and recording subsystems. A brief introduction to ground synthetic aperture radar processing
