益阳自秦置县,历史悠久,人文璀璨。或许因为湖湘的四大水系有三条是从这片土地注入洞庭汇入长江的缘故,致使益阳文化具备有兼容并蓄、海纳百川的胸怀。淳朴的民风、优秀的文化传统滋润涵养着这一方子民,生长出诗歌、绘画以及诸多民间艺术,生长出一代又一代文化精英。尤其明清以降,以郭都贤、陶澍、胡林翼、罗绕典、汤鹏、何凤山等为代表的乡贤士子,以周谷城、周扬、周立波、叶紫、莫应丰等为代表的学者文人,特别是以黄自元、海印、高希舜、林凡等为代表的艺术大家为益阳的文化赢得了声誉。
