On March 11, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced that Su Zhi, former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is under internal investigation for suspected serious law and discipline violation. Su Zhi is the first “tiger” of Xinjiang this year. Before this, Su Zhi already retired from the public office two years ago.
Su Zhi, 65, was born in Lixin, Anhui Province. From November 2006 to September 2009 he acted as the Party Chief of Urumqi which is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
On July 5, 2009, a number of people started to attack passers-by and damage property with vicious violence simultaneously in different locations of Urumqi, causing heavy casualties. Later that year, CPC of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region decided to replace Zhu Hailu with Su Zhi as Party Chief.
Xinjiang has been a multi-ethnic region since ancient times, which requires the local government to be tolerant as well as rigorous. Su Zhi obviously fell short of that standard as the top official. According to early report, Su Zhi described himself as indecisive, “sometimes too timid to make an important decision”. He admitted that his personality could be fatal at crucial moments.
